5 Questions For Black People

This Reader Mail was sent to me by a YouKnowDAMNWell.com reader who decided to remain anonymous. He has 5 questions for black people. Oh, and he SWORE up and down that he’s not racist and just wants answers…

Anonymous:

Greetings.

I contacted you in reference to your website youknowdamnwell.com. I came across your website via google search and noticed your reader mail. I want to say first that i AM NOT a racist person. i LOVE Will smith. but i have questions about black people that i’ve always wanted answers to from black people. I don’t have any black friends and posting my questions online is no help as people would think im racist and get my post deleted real fast.

so please dont think im racist and not post this. in fact, im listening to 50 cent as i type. i am not racist.

here we go.

1) why are black people so loud? mainly the girls. they’d be standing right next to the person their talking to and be yelling as if they was across the street. it gives me a headache. and if you even LOOK at them as if it’s annoying, they’d get LOUDER which is amazing because you wouldn’t think it possibel.

2) why are black people so violent? mainly the men. you see black men in the street and they always look so mean. and if they catch your eye, they wanna fight you. i don’t understand this. its like black men are violent by nature. i try to give black people the benefit of the doubt but then they end up in the newspaper because of violence. just the other day i was reading the newspaper about a young white college student who was beaten so bad that she lost part of her memory. and for what? just to get her purse stolen. an lo and behold, the suspect was BLACK!

3) why does everything gotta be a racist comment toward black people. i mean, anything somebody of a different race say to a black person that they don’t agree with, that person is racist. it’s getting old now. and it’s annoying especially considering that JUST MAYBE, everyone ISN’T RACIST!

4) why do black people prioritize on materialistic things instead of REAL LIFE expenses like rent, insurance or in some extreme cases child support? I use to wonder why black people live in broke down dirty buildings but now i know it’s because of the shoes on his feet or that purse on her arms. y’all blame “society” saying it’s harder for black people when y’all buying $500 sneakers and $1,000 hand bags.

5) and last but not least, why y’all continue to insult yourselves by calling each other the n-bomb? that’s what i fail to understand the most.

again, i am NOT racist. i watched karate kid 3 times just because Will smith’s seed was in it. f–k jackie chan. thanks.

Okay.

While I believe you had some honest intentions in your letter, there were some lowkey insults thrown in there as well, were there not? What’s with “im listening to 50 cent as i type”?

Well Anonymous, I’ve posted your question for the world to see. But don’t expect any respectable answers for questions 1 & 2…

At first, I wasn’t even going to respond to this obviously racist note. However, I could not resist because while I should be offended, I’m not. In fact, I’m rather sad about the many generalizations about my race none of which are true of everyone. Quite frankly all of your observations can be attributed to any race, not just black people.

    1. Some black women are loud, as are some white women. Especially those white women that are “posing”, acting like what they PERCIEVE as black behavior. I am a black woman, and I am not loud and neither are many of the black women I know. A question for you since I answered question 1#. Why do white women jump on the first black man that they see that has money?

2.Black men can be violent, but their violence is usually in response to a situation. For instance, if there is a fight, or if he happens to run with a gang. Whatever the reason, while I may not agree, I have never heard of a black man just being VIOLENT for nothing. Question 2# How come white people shoot up schools and kill numerous amounts of innocent people because they were “bullied”. How is it possible that these same white children have access to guns and bombs but their parents have no clue?

    3. Quite honestly, if it SOUNDS like a racial comment, it usually is. Blacks are so used to hearing racist comments that sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between racism and genuine interest.
Question 3# for you: Why are white people so punkish and hide behind their comments? Why do make a racist comment and then when they are called on it, they backpedal?

    4. I don’t know many black people who don’t know how to spend their money. All I can say as a single black mom of three, that as I type this: my bills are paid, the rent is paid and I still manage to carry quite a few nice purses. Louis Vuitton is my favorite. Question 4# for you: Why are white people constantly living in trailer parks and sleeping with their relatives making inbred babies all over the Southwest?

    5. Nigger is a word that was given too much power in our lives so we took it! We use it because we can and we want to. However, make no mistake, sweetheart, should you use it in our presence you’ll definitely get to know what loud and violent really mean. My final question 5#: Why is it that white people are so racist and hateful toward blacks but yet you tan to get darker, put collegen in your lips to make them bigger, listen to our music and steal it, try to dress like us, date our men, date our women, package our ethnicity and make palatable for yourselves and STILL hate us?

Thank you, and I am listening to Poison as I type this….

Wow, it surprises me that everywhere I go where there is a white person, they ask me and other blacks a “is it true” question. Its getting old. Being a mature black person, I’m gonna ask you this question. Was it needed to ask those five questions? Would the true answers make your life better? Or did you ask these questions knowing that blacks would get upset and reply in a ghetto, hood, angry way? Some did. Some didn’t. Some didn’t reply at all. My last question to you is, why are you so curious about those who care so little about you?

This is sad, not only is the asker racist, with his “I’m listening to 50 cent” comment but hes trying to mask that racism by sounding like an ignorant child from the rich suburbs who only contact with blacks is his maid.Secondly the answers are just ridiculous.
Mz Jazzie, stop while your ahead.
Dani, you don’t like white people, thats obvious.
1)don’t call loud white girls posers, they are not emulating black behaviors, if this was the case then blacks who drive Toyota’s must be emulating whites right? oh wait no because there is no correlation between being black and loud or being white and owning a toyota.
2)why did you even justify his question with a response
3)If i ask my black friend if he wants to accompany me to churchs chicken, am i being racist or can a white person not like chicken? I won’t deny the existence of racism but is every white person racist ?
4)Don’t tell me material items aren’t overvalued in black america? turn on MTV or BET and what you see is big cars, big diamonds, and flashy shoes. Bill Cosby asked this question a few years ago and he was considered a traitor. Oh and to answer your question, it’s because they failed to value education and are generally lazy people.
5)This one kills me, Nigger is a bad word, it was used to dehumanize a whole race of people, it was used so the slave owners could deny that these people even existed on the same plane as them. It should not be worn as a badge of pride, in fact using it in your everyday vocabulary just allows for others to use it, it shows that this word is reserved for people who are friends and thats wrong, IMO the first step to eliminating racism is to stop using words that are meant to exclude people or dehumanize them.

But really I’m just a white guy, the hell do I know?

I like how instead on confronting the issue most of everyone just insults back… that’s the reason this views continue to exist, we allow them too.

It seems to me that you are well intentioned, if painfully ignorant, so for that reason I’m going to try to help you out a bit. Firstly, the main reason people probably thought what you were saying was racist is because the vast majority of what you said applies to a specific CULTURE, and not to the black RACE. Keep that in mind, because it is the answer to several of your questions. So here we go.
    1) Some black women are loud, others aren’t. It will vary a LOT based on the circles you run with, but the point is that it’s all cultural. Black people are not genetically inclined to be louder than white people or any other race, and people of other races raised in louder circles often end up as loud and potentially obnoxious as the black women you may have seen being loud and obnoxious. It’s a cultural thing.

    2) Saying black people are all so violent is a BROAD generalization! That’s equivalent to saying white people all love Journey. It’s certainly true for some white people, but it would be naive to think that were true for the entire race.
And as far as the black people who actually DO seem violent, it’s a cultural thing. Not all black people were raised in this culture, but in certain places the custom is basically not to be outwardly friendly to strangers. Comparably, in certain places the custom is to kiss people on the cheek when being introduced.
And also, people get beat up and robbed by blacks and whites alike literally all the time. One example hardly proves that black people are all thugs.

    3) Sometimes black people are overly defensive about race. This probably comes from the fact that we have been oppressed racially for so many centuries that it is a sensitive topic, but you’re right: sometimes people really aren’t being racist! On the other hand, sometimes they are.

    4) This one is just completely off the mark. While most of the things you have mentioned to this point are at least based in some sort of reality, this one is just kind of random. Poor money management is no more common among black people than among white people. It’s not based on race, it’s based on pure intelligence. It’s not black people who buy shoes over food, it’s idiots. Of any race.

    5) I agree with you wholeheartedly. Some people try to justify using the n word nowadays by saying the word was turned around to be empowering to blacks, but the plain truth is that there’s nothing empowering about it. It carries the same connotations of subordination and primitiveness that it did when it was used for black slaves, and there are plenty of more appropriate synonyms, so I literally have NO IDEA why people still use it.

Lastly, a number of your comments throughout your letter were extremely patronizing, although you probably didn’t mean them that way. Saying you love Will Smith implies that he is some kind of representative of all black people. That is stupid and incorrect. Also, 50 Cent uses the n word, so listening to him is not remotely empowering to black people. Nice try, though.
    Good luck in life.
